Oscars International English School recommends a visit to Dun Laoghaire

At Oscars International English School Dublin, we like to let our students know what’s going on in the great city of Dublin. Dublin is a small but vibrant city with great galleries, wonderful parks and some of the best pubs in the world. This week we are going to jump on the DART and head to Dun Loaghaire.

Walk of the Weekend – Dun Laoghaire Pier

This is one of the most popular walks on the south side of the city. It should take you about thirty minutes to get to the end of the pier and back but in all likelihood you will stop and stare at everything that’s happening around you on several occasions. Whether it’s old men fishing off the pier’s edge, kids jumping into the sea or the way the clouds are gathering over the Dublin mountains behind you there is always quite a lot to take in on a walk here. If you’re lucky you might get to see a full brass band and if you’re really lucky you could even see a basking shark. If you don’t see either, don’t get too stressed, there’s always Teddy’s Ice Cream.

Swim of the Weekend – The Forty-Foot

We will warn you straight away: it is cold! The forty-foot is a Dublin institution and is famous for its Christmas Day swim. There are people who come here everyday and swear that it is the one thing that keeps them alive and out of hospital. We are not so sure but there is certainly a strange charm about the place and it is an utterly unique, if normally freezing cold, experience to go for a swim here.

Ok so it’s a library and after a week of studying, you are probably sick of looking at books but believe me, this place is worth just dropping into. This place is arguably Ireland’s greatest example of civic architecture and it is a stunning space. You don’t even have to stay to read a book. Just come along and look at the view across to Howth from the large bay windows. There are lots of events at this venue so it is worth keeping an eye on their website.

Pub of the Weekend – The Forty-Foot

The best thing about the Forty-Foot is that you can sit outside and look at the world pass you by. On occasion, they host gigs here too and the atmosphere can be great depending on the crowd. Just outside the main town is the Purty Kitchen. If you like music, and I mean rock from the past, then you might appreciate some of the top-class tribute acts that play here every weekend. Worth checking out their website to see what’s happening.
